Types of padlocks
Types ofpadlocks
Padlocks vary from simple tosophisticated high-security gadgets but whatever the security level, they allhave 3 main parts: a fetter, body and the fastening mechanism. The shackle islooped to close the locker being closed, whether it is a chain or hasp. The bodycovers the locking mechanism which is a cylinder in the case of keyed locks anda dial or rotary mechanism for keyless combination locks.
The wide application of padlocks, from homedoors and gates, school and gym lockers, storage units and safes requires anequally wide spectrum of lock.
(i) Weather resistant padlocks
These are locks meant for outdoor use, since they are able towithstand harsh elements such as rain, moisture, heat, and so on, without corrodingthe internal locking mechanism. They are made of stainless steel or zinccoated.
(ii) Combination locks
These are keyless locks that let you open or close it using asequence of button codes of a rotary dial. This type is very convenient when youhave to operate several locks or where multiple users operate the same padlock. The use of a hard to guess code makes them mid to high security locks and theymake the best locks for gym cabinetsand storage units.
(iii) Keyed-alikelocks
These arealso mostly combination padlocks but they have an additional master key controlfeature. Through this, multiple locks can be opened by the same key in case ofemergency such as forgetting or losing the combination code.
(iv) Laminated locks
In this case, multiple metal layers are riveted to form a toughtamper resistant body that is difficult to pick.
(v) High-securitylocks
